Live Bait Coming Soon!
In the early Spring of 2019, Dixie Rods will offer live bait. Minnows will include fathead minnows, golden shiners, and rosy reds. We also plan to offer common nightcrawlers, red worms and possibly mealworms for trout. Shad is also in our future plans as well as crickets and leaches.
We are setting up bait tanks now which are 330 gallon totes configured with a 330 gph submersible pump, filter system and aerator. These bait tanks will allow for a large supply of minnows and shad of various types.
If you are looking for a certain type of live bait? Our goal is to offer what others don't. So if you are looking for a certain type of bait and we don't have it, let us know! If enough people want it, we'll start carrying it.
RULE OF THUMB FOR LIVE BAIT
Minnows are typically a cold-water bait. They’re the choice from opening day when water is 40 to 50 degrees until the temperature reaches 60 to 64 degrees.
Leeches become number one by May and produce well through summer to October.
Nightcrawlers have their place, but it isn’t around panfish-infested weed beds in July. However, crawlers work well on deeper structures such as humps and rock bars, sandbars and after dark when water is 65 to 80 degrees.
